CM Manoj Kumar is back to winning form after securing the Kundan Singh Open Chess Championship title at the FASANOC Olympic House. He was unbeaten at 4.5 points with four wins and a draw with Goru Arvind. CM Calvin Prasad, who lost to Kumar, tallied 4 points to finish 2nd.
Goru Arvind finished 3rd with 2.5 points, and Juan Clomera was 4th with 2 points. Kumar said experience proved vital as he did not prepare for this meet. “I had the patience and skills to overcome my opponents. Experience really proved the difference in the tournament,” the Saint Vincent College teacher said.
In the B-Grade, former junior champion Ronald Terubea scooped the top prize after recording 7.5 points followed by Menash Fareed and Martin Feussner on 6.5 points each.
Youngest female Olympiad Kabrina Terubea won the women’s grade with 7.5 points while Gloria Sukhu finished second on six points followed by Amy Bale on third with 4.5 points. Vinooda Seniwaratene won the primary school.
Fiji Chess Federation president Doctor Virgilio de Asa was satisfied with the turnout and the outcome of the day-long tournament.”We had 22 players participating in the tournament and taking in consideration this is the first tournament of the season, it was not a bad turnout,” De Asa said.”It was a good start to the year and I’m particularly impressed with the amount of young players in the B-Grade division especially females which is a good sign to our development program.”
