12-year old Menash Fareed of Yat Sen Primary School and Ronald Terubea of Nausori High School won the Primary & Secondary School’s Championships respectively at Tappoo City Complex on Sunday 19 May 2013.
The duo continued their impressive performance at the 2013 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship where Menash Fareed scored 3/9 and Ronald Terubea, 5/9.
Jacquelyn Masilomani was second at primary level while Semisi Vukikomoala, the young brother of national women’s rep Hilda Vukikomoala, came in third. In the secondary division Kabrina Terubea was second and Amy Bale finished third.
Fiji Chess president Doctor Virgilio De Asa said there was a good response from primary and secondary school students. “It was a good competition, both Menash and Ronald were unbeaten in their five games,” De Asa said.
“I believe they all played well. All these players have been playing consistently in previous tournaments.”
De Asa said 10-year-old Masilomani would be a star in the future.”She is one of the young players who is playing really well in all tournaments. I think she will be at her very best within the next two years or so.”
