2014 Courts Fiji Open

National Champion Calvin Prasad successfully defended his title at the Courts Chess Open Championship in Suva on Sunday. Prasad finished undefeated with 6.5 points out of 7, ahead of Manoj Kumar on 6. This is Prasad’s sixth straight tournament win this year.

“As expected, it was a tough tournament from the first round. Manoj Kumar and Taione Sikivou mounted a strong challenge for the title, and I’m glad I managed to find the right moves on the day”.

Prashil Prakash edged out former national rep Jaiwant Singh on tie-break to claim third spot. Veteran Gloria Sukhu took out the Womens category after holding Hilda Vukikomoala to a draw. Vukikomoala had to settle for second place.

In the Secondary schools category, Sigatoka lad William Bennion emerged victorious with 4.5 points. Rajiv Chand came second with 4 points.

The Primary School category was convincingly won by Shivaan Sharma on 4 points. Rudr Prasad and Gor Nahapetyan came second and third respectively.

Fiji Chess Vice-President Gloria Sukhu was impressed by the huge turnout at the event.
“The larger number of Primary Schools students participating was very encouraging.” said Sukhu. “It augurs well for the future of chess.”

Sukhu thanked sponsors Courts for tournament prizes, and Tappoo City for sponsoring the tournament venue.
