Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad snatched away the Kundan Singh Open title from CM Manoj Kumar by registering a flawless 6/6 at the Level 4 Tappoo City Conference Room. CM Manoj Kumar and CM Noel Adricula finished 2nd and 3rd with 5/6.
CM Ronald Terubea and Anthony Maelasi of Solomon Islands shared the 4th and 5th positions at 4.5/6. “The tournament had a record turnout of 45 participants of varying ages,” states President Dr. Virgilio De Asa. “Many children enjoyed playing in the new 20 minutes plus 10 seconds rapid format which is aimed at getting FIDE Rapid Ratings for local chess players.”
The tournament attracted a mix of Fijian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Armenian, Mongolian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Israeli, Afghani and Israeli players to demonstrate how chess is loved universally around the world. In the Under-14 Category, Jacqueline Masilomani won with 4/6, followed by Vinooda Senewiratne at 3/6 and Meshan Fareed at 2.5/6.
The Under-16 Category was won by Austin Koroi with 4/6, followed by Kabrina (Cydel) Terubea at 3.5/6 and Claudya Koroi at 3/6. Young Male Athlete of the Year Menash Fareed surprised by winning the Under-20 Category with 4.5/6 ahead of WFM Hilda Vukikomoala who finished at 4/6.
A total of $ 300.00 worth of cash prizes were distributed to winners from different categories.
