2014 National Chess Championship

Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad secured his 2nd National title in a row after he remained unbeaten with a score of 8/9. He drew against top seed FIDE Master (FM) Stuart Fancy and CM Manoj Kumar to finish a fantastic year of chess.

Coming in 2nd overall on the points table and winning her first ever Women’s National Championship was 16-year old Cydel (Kabrina) Terubea who amassed 7/9. Her performance was the surprise of the tournament as she scored upset wins over FM Stuart Fancy, WFM Hilda Vukikomoala, CM Manoj Kumar and Stanley Zhang.

CM Manoj Kumar and FM Stuart Fancy finished 3rd and 4th overall with 7/9 each, while Secondary School student Zen Borg was 5th with 6.5/9. Olympiad representative Taione Sikivou ended his tournament on a respective score of 6/9.

“The performance of younger players like Cydel Terubea, Zen Borg and Menash Fareed is encouraging for the future of Fiji chess,” mentions Junior Development Officer WCM Gloria Sukhu. “It shows that Sunday coaching sessions at Fiji Club by Calvin Prasad, Manoj Kumar, myself and Ravikesh Kumar are going in the right direction. We hope to find more young players in 2015.”

In the Women’s Division, WFM Hilda Vukikomoala came 2nd with 5.5/9. She was followed by WCM Gloria Sukhu on 3rd with 5/9.
