Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad successfully defended the Mohammed Badshah Memorial title by finishing at 4.5/5 after drawing with CM Manoj Kumar in the final round. CM Ronald Terubea came second with 4/5 while Manoj Kumar was third with the same score.
Australia-based Dr. Sanmogam Gounder kindly provided FJD $ 1000 in prize money for the winners. “To allow a fair distribution of prizes, the players were divided into Elite and Intermediate Categories under a 20 minutes plus 10 seconds format,” informs General Secretary Goru Arvind. “Almost 20 participants received cash prizes apart from certificates of participation.”
Cydel Kabrina Terubea won the Women’s Division in the Elite Category with 3/5 while Teliko Koroi topped the same division in the Intermediate Category with 2/5. Under-20 National Champion Tianata Terubea continued his excellent form by winning the Junior Division in the Elite Category with 3/5. Newcomer Agra Navaratne topped the same division in the Intermediate Category by scoring 4/5.
Young Rudr Prasad impressed in the Open Division for the Intermediate Category with a flawless 5/5.
“The tournament was a grand success since we had a total of 40 players with a number of newcomers,” states CM Calvin Prasad. “We are pleased with the way our younger players are performing of late, and Tianata Terubea is now Fiji’s official Junior rep for the 2015 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in July.”
In other results, Meshan Fareed topped the Primary School Division in the Intermediate Category with 2.5/5 while Philip Leong won the Secondary School Division in the Intermediate Category with 3/5.
The next tournament in the Federation’s Calendar is the Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open on June 14.
