36th FMF Fiji National Chess Championship

Fiji’s top chess players will converge at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel on December 16 to participate in the premier 36th Fiji National Chess Championship.

Tournament: 36th FMF Fiji National Chess Championships.
Date: Qualifiers – December 16, 2017.  Finals – December 17, 2017.
Venue: Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva.
Format: FIDE-Rated Swiss, 5-rounds, 20min + 10sec increment from move 1.
Entry Fee: $5 for Juniors (Under-20), $10 for everyone else.

Qualifiers (December 16):

  • Registration: 8.30am – 9.00am.
  • Round 1-3: 9.00am – 12.00pm.
  • Lunch: 12.00pm – 1.00pm.
  • Round 4-5: 1.00pm – 3.00pm.
  • Presentation: 3.30pm.
  • The top placed female player will be crowned the Fiji Women’s National Champion.
  • The top placed junior (U-20) player will be crowned Fiji Junior National Champion.

Finals (December 17)

  • Only the top eight players at the end of the 5-round qualifiers on December 16 will play-off in the Finals, with the winner crowned Fiji National Champion.
  • The Finals will comprise quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final.  Each match will have two games.

National Selection

  • The Fiji National Champion and the Fiji Women’s National Champion will qualify for the Fiji National Team to the Chess Olympiad in Georgia in 2018.

Prizes:

  • $1000 cash for finals (December 17).
  • Chess sets, kits, and clocks and FMF gift packs as consolation prizes (December 16).
  • A player can receive only one prize.

Tie-Breaks (Qualifiers):

  • Direct encounter.
  • The greater number of wins.
  • The greater number of games with Black.
  • Buchholz Cut 1.
  • Buchholz.

Tie-Breaks (Finals):

  • Two blitz games, 5min per players per game.
  • If still tied, an Armageddon blitz match (6min for white, 5min for white).
  • The greater number of wins.
  • The greater number of games with Black.
  • Buchholz Cut 1.
  • Buchholz.
