Form 5 student Zen Borg and Jacquelyn Masilomani of Class 7 represented Fiji in the Asian Age-Group Chess Championship at Macau from June 3-12.
Accompanied by Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Gloria Sukhu, the duo managed to win against experienced opponents from the Asian region.
“Walking into their first international outing, Borg and Masilomani displayed patience and determination,” reports Gloria Sukhu. “They adapted well to my coaching during one week of play and produced decent results. I am proud of these youngsters and wish them with more success in the future.”
Jacquelyn Masilomani won a challenging match against Athisa Suphunsy of Laos, while Zen Borg defeated Sopha Bountheung and Bouasithong Songkan from the same country.
In a crucial match that stretched for hours, Borg held Xayophonh Chanthavongsa, a tough opponent from Laos to a tie and finished with 3 wins and 1 draw.
The duo hope to follow into the footsteps of 13-year old 2013 Young Male Athlete of the Year Menash Fareed who is now ranked No. 10 in Fiji, proving that age is merely a number in chess.
