The Tappoo City Open Chess Championship was won by Candidate Master Calvin Prasad. He triumphed in all 4 of his games. He was followed closely by arch rivals Dr Neel Arora and Candidate Master Manoj Kumar who had 3 wins. The Best Female Player in the Elite Division was given to Wati Kado, an upcoming youngster.
The Intermediate Division tied between 4 players who amassed 4 wins out of 5 games. After tie-breaks, the order of winners from 1st to 4th was declared in the order of Martin Feussner, Brian Terubea, Joseph Yuen and 9 year old Jacky Masilomani. The Female Division was won by Jacky Masilomani at 4 wins. She was followed by Louise Masilomani at 3 wins and Sugandha Goswami at 2 wins and 1 draw.
Candidate Master Calvin Prasad won 100 % of his 9 rounds to win the 2011 National Chess Championship. He played against a very strong pool which consisted of arch rival Candidate Master Manoj Kumar who had won the last 4 National Chess Championships, the unpredictable wizard of end-games Dr Neel Arora, Australia based veteran Dr Sanmogam Goundar, New Zealand based Asheesh Gautam (who is the only Fiji player to have upset an International Master), USP Champion Rajiv Raj, the bullet-brained Under-20 Champion Ronald Terubea, Goru Arvind, Jun Adricula and the aggressive Noel Adricula. It was an intense 5-day tournament which had several players vying for the top position in different rounds.
