The 19th Kundan Singh Open Chess Championships held on Sunday was the great starter event for the Fiji Chess Federation 2010 calendar.

 CM Calvin Prasad kept his calm and outwitted defending champion CM Manoj Kumar in a teetering match in the fourth round to claim the first prize. CM Prasad played well with four wins and a draw to amass a total of 4.5 points out of 5 rounds. CM Kumar won his final match and managed to salvage second place while Goru Arvind settled for third place with 3.5 points.

In the premier division, USP student Rajiv Raj from Labasa outplayed his field to secure first place with 5/5 points. Hilda Vukikimoala won the Female category while Wan You Lan won the Secondary School Division. Esha Raicar won the Primary Schools event.

 FCF President Dr. Virgilio De Asa was pleased with the good turnout and was impressed by the level of play displayed by the juniors. He also thanked the sponsors for their continued support.

The next event will be held on 20th March 2010 and will concurrently have the National Womens Championship.
