Big Plans for Chess

National champion and schoolteacher Kumar was endorsed as Fiji's representative during the Fiji Chess Federation annual general meeting at the Fiji Olympic House yesterday.

FCF president Dr Virgilio De Asa said national team members for the World Chess Olympiad in late September in Russia would be confirmed later.

Dr De Asa said 2009 was a "busy and successful year" for FCF with plans to host an international event in Nadi this year.

More in store for Fiji Chess

The Fiji Chess Federation’s Invitational National Championship in December would be open for overseas players to participate.

FCF president Dr Virgilio De Asa said the tournament would be a Federation of International des Euchess (FIDE, world governing chess body) rated one. He said this was part of their move to expose local players to high level competition. The national championship is scheduled to be held on December 5-12.

Kumar wins Courts Homecenters Open

SCHOOL teacher Manoj Kumar took out the Courts Homecentres Open Chess Championship at the Fiji Olympic House yesterday.

Candidate master Kumar finished with 4.5 points from five games while fellow candidate master Calvin Prasad was second with four points. Dr Neel Arora settled for third with 2.5 points.

Fiji Chess Federation president Dr Virgilio De Asa said both Kumar and Prasad had a bright future in the game.

2009 Courts Homecenters Open

CHESS candidate masters Manoj Kumar and Calvin Prasad are joint favourites to win Saturday's Courts Homecentres Open Champ-ionship at the Fiji Olympic House, in Suva.

Both players featured prominently in the recent Oceania Zonal Champion-ship in Gold Coast, Aust-ralia, however, pressure will be on schoolteacher Kumar to hit back after a disappointing performance in the National Chess Lea-gue last Sunday.

Veteran Dr Neel Arora, former national rep to the chess Olympiad Asheesh Gautam, Goru Arvind and Asheel Singh will provide tough challenge for the two in the A category while yo-ungsters Ravi Bhavsar, Dhi-raj Chand, Ga-urav Raicar and Wayne Ar-eki will fight it out in the B category.

CM Prasad wins 5 straight

Candidate Master Calvin Prasad successfully defended the chess league title for a fifth year in a row at the Nasese Medical Centre in Suva yesterday.

Prasad points totaled up to 7 out of 7, and said a lot of pressure was on him to retain the title.
