2010 Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open

The 2010 Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open Chess Championships will be held on Sunday 11th July 2010 at the Fiji School of Medicine Pasifika Campus, Extension Street, Suva.

This eighth edition of the memorial event celebrates the chessing achievements of Fiji Chess prodigy Rajnesh Parmeshwar, a very promising dynamic young player, who was Fiji's first representative to the Oceania Zonal Chess Championships on Australia's Gold Coast in 1999 and was well on his way to a successful international career.

His other achievements included numerous local tournament victories in both schools and individual events. Parmeshwar’s tragic passing stunned the local chess scene and the event to mark his memory is rightfully a high contested event.

Fiji Chess Federation President Dr. Virgilio De Asa mentioned that then tournament should be an exhilarating day of chess where the country's top chess enthusiasts vie for honours. Defending champion schoolteacher CM Manoj Kumar is expected to face tough challenges from strong contenders such as CM Calvin Prasad and Dr. Neel Arora in the open category while Gloria Sukhu will be the favourite for the female division.

The Primary & Secondary School Division will be fought by a large pool of players, where talented players such as Wayne Areki, Hilda Vukikimoala, Dhiraj Chand and Esha Raicar will all try and stake a claim on the event. FCF Assistant General Secretary Gaurav Raicar said that the annual sponsorship for the tournament is provided by the Parmeshwar family and his friends.

He mentioned that Dinesh Parmeshwar, Rajnesh’s brother, was the driving force behind the event and that the continued sponsorship was welcome towards chess development in Fiji.

The event will begin registration at 8 am and the first round is scheduled to start at 8:30 am.
