2009 Primary & Secondary School
The 2009 Primary and Secondary Schools Chess Championships was held on Saturday 2nd May 2009 at the Fiji Olympic House in Flagstaff.
Current Women’s National Champion, Frentina Antrea relinquished her crown, as she was not be eligible for the title this year.
The event did not disappoint when it when right down to the wire in both divisions with Wati Kado's defeat of Elizabeth Suyeon in the third round earning her the title ahead of a tough field of primary school participants.
“We hold this Fiji Chess Federation sanctioned event annually to coincide with the athletics so that schools can send their chess representatives along and with secondary schools chess at its strongest in recent years, competition delivered the expected with exhillarating chess played between the students,” said General Secretary Dr. Jashint Maharaj.
The secondary schools category saw an upset when novice Dhiraj Chand had a draw against favorite Ravi Bhavsar managing to tip him in the final tie-break. This was Chand's first win and he was delighted with the outcome.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School took out first and second placings, Wayne Areki of Marist Brothers High School settled for third position with 4 points out of 5 rounds.
