26th Brijlal Open Chess Championships held on Saturday 21st March 2009 at Fiji Olympic House.

The event saw 35 players in total indicating a good start to the year for Fiji Chess Federation.

In the Major category the competition was open going in the final round with three participants in the running to the title.

Defending champion CM Calvin Prasad ended the tournament with 4points while CM Manoj Kumar lost to Taione Sikivou in the final round to deny him first place. Sikivou was placeed second in the overall competition and his upset win over the current national champion marked a coming of age that he too will now be a force to reckon with in Fiji chess.

The Minor competition was won by Ravinesh Singh ahead of Seru siasarocivi and Gloria Sukhu.

Amy Yuen was the Best Beginner, while Dr Rachna Ram claimed the best female prize. Christain Clarke won the Beginners category.
